2024 Water Resources Intern

We serve a variety of public and private clients throughout Minnesota. Local travel can be anticipated occasionally to meet with clients, local regulators, and contractors or to collect and verify field information and conditions. Field visits are also routinely required for projects during construction.

This position was created to support our growing list of projects and to continue to provide high levels of service to our clients. This position provides an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in a wide variety of water resources roles, with training in specific areas of interest from professionals with 20+ years of experience. The ideal candidate is pursuing a degree in a natural resource related field, hydrology, or civil engineering.

This position will provide opportunities to:

  • collect and analyze water quality, hydrologic and hydraulic field data
  • expand technical writing skills
  • enter, manage, and analyze data using GIS tables, spreadsheets, and other applications including AutoCAD, HydroCAD, XP-SWMM, and other H&H modeling
  • support other business-critical functions for a small and growing firm
  • engineering students will have the opportunity to work towards a PE certification with a licensed PE
  • gain hands-on experience and training on essential tasks for future careers across the water resources field

Required qualifications and experience for this position include:

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, hydrology, natural resources, engineering, or related field
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and ESRI ArcMap (GIS)
  • Strong organization, communication (written and verbal), and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, offering and receiving feedback and direction to support goals and improve processes
  • Adaptability in day-to-day tasks, from home and office to field
  • Uses self-motivation and takes initiative to ensure tasks are complete and on schedule
  • Accurately track and enter hours worked on projects daily into a timesheet
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and willingness and ability to get a boating license and attend water safety class training
  • Ability to problem solve in the field and in design, asking for help when needed

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Work is performed both at home and in the field. Computer tasks are performed primarily at home but there will be some work completed, primarily prep work for field assignments, at our base in St. Louis Park. Field assignments will require bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, lifting to 50 pounds, pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, stooping, walking in rough terrain, in-water work, and occasionally contending with adverse weather conditions requiring special clothing and safety precautions.

You must have internet access, a valid driver’s license, and access to reliable transportation. It is preferred that you have proficiency in operating a small fishing boat, launching a boat at a boat access, and using GPS to locate sampling locations in a lake. An online boating safety course will be required prior to operating a boat.

Compensation:

Pay is dependent upon experience, range is $17-20/hr.

Location and Logistics:

Based in Twin Cities Metro Area with travel during the day required to various work sites with staff in company vehicle.

Position is between April 1- September 30, 2024. 30-40 hours per week, with somewhat flexible hours. Option for less availability in spring and fall when in school. Hours are not always a standard 9-5, as our schedule adapts for long field-work days.
